Story

The 2007 World Junior A Hockey Challenge received $10,000 from Hosting BC. The international championship for players under 19 drew 132 athletes from Russia, Germany, Belarus, the US and nine Canadian provinces. There were 26,000 spectators and an estimated TV audience of one million. The webcast had 10,000 viewers. Three hundred volunteers supported the event.

Direct economic benefit included revenue for accommodation, restaurants, retail and other industries over the week of competition. There were more than 120 NHL scouts in attendance, an indication of the calibre of the event; Hockey Canada is eager to see other major hockey events in the community and region.

Minor hockey players were involved in tournament events, offering further motivation to pursue their sport. Officials and volunteers upgraded training to international levels and may serve at future major events. Trail, Nelson and Castlegar now have a legacy of co-hosting a major event that would otherwise be too large for any one community to organize.

Hosting BC provides BC communities with funding to host national and international sport events. The program is supported by the Province of British Columbia.
