Susan Kelsey, chair of the Comox Valley Spirit of BC Committee, shares some of the committee's success stories. The following is excerpted from her letter to 2010 Legacies Now:

To celebrate Spirit of BC Week [2005] in February, our committee hosted a community celebration, or as we call it, a Spirit Event. At our debrief of the event, we started talking about more great ideas for next year, building on the theme used this year.

In addition to planning and staging the Spirit Event, our committee sent a delegation to the Torino 2006 Olympic Winter Games. We sent a total of six people at different times so we would have representation from the Comox Valley for the duration of the Games. We each had different experiences, and made different contacts, but we all feel we were successful in promoting Comox Valley, Mount Washington, and the Vancouver Island Mountain Sports Centre.

"I'd like to congratulate the Comox Valley Spirit of BC Community Committee for the tremendous work they're doing on behalf of our community," said the Hon. Stan Hagen, Minister of Child and Family Development and MLA for Comox Valley. "They are truly committed to ensuring our entire region benefits from the excitement and investment coming to B.C. before, during and after the 2010 Winter Games, and I'm pleased to work with them to achieve that goal. On behalf of our entire community, thank you."

The group received great local and provincial media coverage while in Torino, said Kelsey, including the Vancouver Sun, The Province and CTV News. We have been actively following up on all the contacts we made and sharing our experiences with the community. The interest and excitement about the 2010 Winter Games is at a new high in the Comox Valley.

As an Olympian, I had the opportunity to interact with our current athletes at Canada Olympic House and with Olympians from past and games at the VISA Olympians Reunion Center. I was so impressed with Canada's Olympians, both with their performances and with their maturity. The 42 top-five finishes for our athletes speaks so well for 2010. I believe that we will "Own the Podium"!
