Story

The 2007 FIS NorAm Canada Cup and Western Canadian Championships and Haywood Canada Cup received $15,000 from Hosting BC. The premier cross country ski event in Western Canada, the Cup attracted 286 athletes, aged 8-67, who competed in front of up to 2,000 spectators. Seven Canadian provinces and territories were represented, and 200 volunteers supported the event.

The event provided affordable access to national competition for young athletes. Direct economic benefit included increased revenue to hospitality, service and retail industries and additional profile for the Bulkley Valley Nordic Centre. Officials and volunteers upgraded their skills to national level and may serve at future major events. The local Spirit of BC Committee was involved in the event, which was given the theme Spirit of the Mountains. The link to other communities celebrating Spirit Week increased profile for the event and connected it more closely to the 2010 Winter Games.

Hosting BC provides BC communities with funding to host national and international sport events. The program is supported by the Province of British Columbia.
