Story

Nechako Elementary School used an Explorations grant of $10,000 to offer a two-week music camp to 25 children aged 10 to 13. Children took part in group and individual music lessons, with many able to begin playing as a group by the third day. The camp helped to raise awareness of the need for a band program within the local school system. Other objectives included making fine arts more visible in the community, and introducing music to local children. Prior to the camp, the community was without a band. The Kitimat Arts for Youth has since continued the camp's cause by raising awareness and forming a local musical group.

Explorations provided students in kindergarten to Grade 7 with opportunities to explore arts, sport and recreation in summer camp settings. The program, which ran from 2005-2008, served students who were otherwise unable to attend summer camps due to location, local resources or financial limitations. Explorations was supported by the Province of British Columbia.
