Story

In 2007, Explorations funding of $6,250 helped the Gold Trail School District offer three arts, sport and recreation camps for 106 students, aged 5-12. Three schools participated in the camps, hosted at Ashcroft Elementary. The camps served the communities of Ashcroft, Cache Creek and Venables Valley. Organizers say there are few local opportunities for students to work with artists or participate in structured recreational activities; for the students, the Explorations camps were a new experience.

During the camps, the students were introduces to new physical activity experiences. Students used the trampoline, wall bars, balance beams and other equipment to develop strength and balance. During the arts activities, students sketched and painted to create banners that were hung along Ashcroft’s Main Street. In addition, each camper received books as part of the program in a Great Book Giveaway – one camper said it was like having Christmas.

Explorations provided students in kindergarten to Grade 7 with opportunities to explore arts, sport and recreation in summer camp settings. The program, which ran from 2005-2008, served students who were otherwise unable to attend summer camps due to location, local resources or financial limitations. Explorations was supported by the Province of British Columbia.
