The BC Sport Participation Program launched in 2004 to increase sport participation in community and school-based sports, while also increasing participation by seniors and people with disabilities.

The BCSP Program invested more than $4 million and captured more than 264,000 new sport participants in over 110 communities province-wide, creating new sport participation opportunities for children and youth, people with disabilities, seniors, Aboriginal youth, and girls and women. The program also supported training for more than 11,200 coaches and sport leaders throughout BC.

Several of the projects initiated in BC to increase sport and recreation participation were so successful they expanded nationally. These include Skate Canada’s (BC/Yukon) Pond to Podium, Gymnastics BC’s Kids CanMove, BC Wheelchair Sports’ Bridging the Gap, BC Blind Sports’ Early Intervention Program, and Swim BC’s See Yourself Swimming.

The BC Sport Participation Program was funded by the Province of British Columbia and Sport Canada.
