Wickaninnish Community School Hosts Explorations Camps

Story

Wickaninnish Community School in Tofino received $10,750 to allow 62 children from far-reaching villages such as Esowista and Ahousaht to participate in five summer camps in the summer of 2005. The Pottery, Pencil, and Paint Camp, a two-week program for those age nine to 12 exposed participants to a variety of art mediums including pottery, painting, and drawing. Sports camps offered soccer, basketball, and a gymnastics camp that included an aquatics and equestrian component. All sports class were run by professional instructors with a variety of equipment and resources not ordinarily available in the community. The camps also included SportFit for warm-up exercises and motivated attendees to try new activities and sport programs.


Explorations provided students in kindergarten to Grade 7 with opportunities to explore arts, sport and recreation in summer camp settings. The program, which ran from 2005-2008, served students who were otherwise unable to attend summer camps due to location, local resources or financial limitations. Explorations was supported by the Province of British Columbia.
