Story

The 2005 Sierra Wireless Whistler Cup received $10,000 from Hosting BC. An international juvenile ski race for boys and girls aged 11-14, the event drew 350 athletes from 16 countries, including Hungary, Slovakia, Korea and Switzerland as well as eight Canadian provinces. More than 1,000 spectators attended the event which was supported by 700 volunteers.

Economic impact included approximately $500,000 injected into local businesses in an off-peak period. Equipment, such as a new timing system, purchased for the event will be used at other competitions locally and provincially. The event also enabled training and certification for officials and volunteers in preparation for the 2010 Olympic Winter Games.

Hosting BC provides BC communities with funding to host national and international sport events. The program is supported by the Province of British Columbia.
