Story

The 2007 Birmingham Wheelchair Tennis National Championships received $10,000 from Hosting BC. The event drew 16 athletes, aged 20-50, who came from five Canadian provinces to compete in front of 50 spectators.

The event allowed local athletes to compete at a national level without significant travel expense. It also supported athlete recruitment by showcasing the country's best players to newly injured individuals, allowing them to see the potential for their own involvement. Direct economic benefit included increased spending by participants and guests and using local suppliers for goods and services needed for the event.

The event created increased accessibility at the local tennis club and a pool of trained volunteers who may serve at future events such as the 2010 World Wheelchair Rugby Championships.

Hosting BC provides BC communities with funding to host national and international sport events. The program is supported by the Province of British Columbia.
