Story

The 2007 Pontiac GMC Canadian Alpine Skiing Championships at Whistler received $15,000 from HostingBC. There were 166 athletes in the competition, aged 16-51, who came from nine countries, including Japan, Slovakia, and New Zealand, as well as five Canadian provinces. There were an estimated 10,000 spectators and an extensive international TV audience.

The event increased the quota of BC athletes and helped develop coaching to national levels. Direct economic and tourism benefits included 400 visitors to Whistler for 10 days bringing increased revenues to accommodation, restaurants and transportation industries. The 500 volunteers who supported the event are now trained to national levels and may serve in future major competitions, such as the 2008 World Cup.

Hosting BC provides BC communities with funding to host national and international sport events. The program is supported by the Province of British Columbia.
