Story

The 2006 Odlum Brown Vancouver Open tennis championship received $20,000 from Hosting BC. There were 140 athletes from 31 countries participating in the week-long event, which drew up to 15,000 spectators. Among the competitors were players from Ecuador, Paraguay, Serbia, Indonesia as well as from four Canadian provinces.

The event created a pool of 170 trained volunteers and 40 officials for future events and served as a catalyst for the host site to purchase new stadium court lights of international event standard. More than $200,000 was spent locally on event set-up and equipment purchased for the event, such as marquee tents and portable nets, will be made available to other provincial competitions. Direct economic benefits included more than 300 hotel room nights booked and local spending by participants and spectators on meals, transportation and other goods and services.

Hosting BC provides BC communities with funding to host national and international sport events. The program is supported by the Province of British Columbia.
