Story

The 2008 Canadian Snowboard Nationals received $10,000 from Hosting BC. The event was the first opportunity for international level competition at the Olympic Halfpipe and Snowboardcross competition venues. It attracted 184 athletes, aged 13-43, who came from eight countries including Poland, Switzerland and New Zealand as well as from nine Canadian provinces/territories. There were 750 spectators and 100 volunteers supported the event.

The event provided international level competition without significant travel expense, and junior and development athletes were able to compete alongside senior and national team athletes. Direct economic benefits included increased revenue for the local tourism and hospitality industries during an otherwise slow time of year, as well as additional business for local suppliers. The event was used to promote awareness of the sport; more than 200 local high school students attended the event to be inspired by watching elite athletes in action. The Nationals also helped prepare athletes, coaches, officials and volunteers for the 2010 Winter Games. Some of the equipment purchased for the event will be available for future local and provincial events.

Hosting BC provides BC communities with funding to host national and international sport events. The program is supported by the Province of British Columbia.
