Story
The 2007 Odlum Brown Vancouver Open tennis championship received $20,000 from HostingBC. The event drew 140 athletes, aged 15-37, who came from 25 countries including Israel, India, Uruguay and Serbia. There were also athletes from five Canadian provinces. There were 12,000 spectators for the event with an extensive international TV audience and a webcast audience that averaged 1,500 viewers daily.
The event was an opportunity for BC's best players to compete in a professional event held locally. There were also special events to introduce children and youth players to international competition. Direct economic benefit included 1,600 hotel room night bookings as well as additional revenues for suppliers and transportation companies. Media exposure is expected to increase sport and other tourism in the area; the event's success led to additional national events awarded to BC, such as the Federation Cup and the Senior National Championships.
