Story

Explorations funding of $15,000 allowed the Mission School District to offer three arts, sport and recreation camps for 25 children aged 6-12. West Heights Elementary hosted camps that involved three schools and provided an opportunity for many students who otherwise would be unable to attend summer camp.

Activities included literacy activities, making and playing drums, and acting. At partner site, the Mission Leisure Centre, children were able to swim and play in the water park. Children also made murals, created a First Nations blanket doll and dream catcher, and experimented with sand art. Baking bannock bread and preparing an Around the World potluck lunch helped students learn about nutrition. Camps ended with performances, exhibits and concerts for families.

Explorations provided students in kindergarten to Grade 7 with opportunities to explore arts, sport and recreation in summer camp settings. The program, which ran from 2005-2008, served students who were otherwise unable to attend summer camps due to location, local resources or financial limitations. Explorations was supported by the Province of British Columbia.
