Story

The 2008 FIS NorAm Cross Country Skiing Competition received $10,000 from Hosting BC. The event attracted 310 athletes, aged 13 and over, who came from New Zealand, Sweden, the US and nine Canadian provinces and territories. There were 500 spectators at the event which was supported by 100 volunteers.

Youth racers from across BC participated in the event providing a rare opportunity to compete in the same event as national level athletes. The event also allowed Canadian athletes a chance to compete internationally without significant travel expense. Direct economic and tourism benefits included 560 out-of-town guests in Vernon and increased revenue for tourism and hospitality businesses at an otherwise slow time of year. Officials and volunteers upgraded skills to international levels to form an experienced resource pool for future events. Sustainable community legacies include computerized facility and competition route maps available to future event organizers.

Hosting BC provides BC communities with funding to host national and international sport events. The program is supported by the Province of British Columbia.
