Story
The 2008 Canadian Interuniversity Sport Swimming Championships received $15,000 from Hosting BC. The event attracted 250 athletes, aged 18-24, who came from nine provinces to compete in front of 2,000 spectators and an estimated webcast audience of 25,000. Seventy-five volunteers supported the event.
Organizers say the event was a catalyst to engage community swim clubs and inspire developing student athletes to pursue their sport. Direct economic and tourism benefits included 1,800 hotel room bookings and estimated visitor spending of $250,000 at an otherwise slow time of year. Volunteers and officials upgraded skills, including specific skill development for medical and physiotherapy students.
