Story

The Alberni School District received Explorations funding of $1,250 to introduce the Olympic sport of wrestling to students from six elementary and two middle schools in the area. This culminated with a free, one-week wrestling camp at Alberni District Secondary School. The initiative, a partnership between the School District and the Alberni Valley Wrestling Club, was attended by almost 100 elementary and 140 high school students. The first camp was a half-day session for younger children, with a more advanced camp the following week. This camp became a feature training camp for B.C.'s Canada Summer Games Team. The provincial team gained additional training opportunities, while participants benefited from elite training partners.

Explorations provided students in kindergarten to Grade 7 with opportunities to explore arts, sport and recreation in summer camp settings. The program, which ran from 2005-2008, served students who were otherwise unable to attend summer camps due to location, local resources or financial limitations. Explorations was supported by the Province of British Columbia.
