Story

Funding of $55,000 from Explorations allowed the Surrey School District to host 11 arts camps and 10 arts, sport and recreation camps. More than 280 students aged 7-13 and coming from 11 inner-city schools participated in the two-week camps. Students engaged in visual arts, drama and dance as well as sports activities, based on the SportFit program. All children participated in a performance and demonstration for families at the completion of the camps.

This was the first year Surrey School District offered free summer camps, benefiting many low-income families in the city. Most children had never before been to camp. Community partners included the BC Lions, Vancouver Whitecaps, and the Surrey Art Gallery.

Explorations provided students in kindergarten to Grade 7 with opportunities to explore arts, sport and recreation in summer camp settings. The program, which ran from 2005-2008, served students who were otherwise unable to attend summer camps due to location, local resources or financial limitations. Explorations was supported by the Province of British Columbia.
