Story

Surrey received $25,000 from Measuring Up. Funds were used to hire a coordinator and conduct community dialogues on accessibility and inclusion issues. Volunteering, employment and recreation were identified as priority areas. Recommended activities included: training for staff of sports, recreation, leisure and arts organizations on meeting the needs of people with disabilities; creating a free registration service for volunteers and job seekers with disabilities; and holding workshops for business people and community organizations on employing people with disabilities.

Measuring Up helps communities assess and improve how accessible and inclusive they are for people with disabilities, seniors and others with similar needs. The program includes a fund, established by the Province of British Columbia, which offers grants to communities to complete accessibility-related projects.
