The 2005 National Age Class Championship for short track speed skating received $10,000 from Hosting BC. The event attracted 183 athletes, aged 12-28, who represented 10 provinces/territories. They competed in front of 3,000 spectators at the Championship which was supported by 200 volunteers.
Economic spin-off included more than 150 hotel room nights booked for the three-day event as well as additional business for local transportation, restaurant and entertainment industries. Publicity surrounding the event provided excellent exposure for the new speed skating club in Surrey. Organizers also promoted the sport as part of the 2010 Olympic Winter Games and encouraged visitors to investigate the Olympic speed skating oval under construction near the airport, as part of their journey home.
