Story

Surrey held its first-ever Wandering Angels Lantern Procession – a successful community arts celebration. With Innovations funding of $21,500, the event created a meaningful partnership between artists, community members, and organizations. The Wandering Angels Workshop offered open studio times during the summer of 2005 for residents to work with artists to create lanterns and props for the procession. More than 300 people took part in weekly lantern-making workshops, with approximately 550 people attending the first-ever procession. As areas of Surrey face rapid urbanization and challenges, the event allowed for positive community connections and showed the community’s resilience and pride. The event has become an annual event in Surrey.

Innovations invests in arts, cultural and heritage organizations wishing to create new opportunities for community members to participate in arts and cultural activities. The program is supported by the Province of British Columbia.
