Story

The Hargobind/Clansmen International Wrestling tournament received $15,000 from Hosting BC. The event served as a forum to select national and international competitors and drew 275 athletes, aged 17-34. There were 3,000 spectators and 80 volunteers supported the event. Seven countries participated, including India, Haiti and South Africa, as well as nine Canadian provinces/territories.

The event provided training and upgrading for officials and volunteers and contributed to the economy with 400 participants visiting and staying in the Coquitlam/Guildford area. A new competition mat surface will remain in the wrestling community and two new commentators were trained. Organizers say interest in the event supports their efforts to establish a permanent training facility in the Surrey area.

Hosting BC provides BC communities with funding to host national and international sport events. The program is supported by the Province of British Columbia.
