Story

The 2008 Ski Jumping and Nordic Combined National Championships and North American Junior Championships received $10,000 from Hosting BC. The event drew 58 athletes, aged 14-20, who came from the US and three Canadian provinces. There were 500 spectators at the event which was supported by 65 volunteers.

Organizers said that experience on an Olympic venue is extremely important, especially since Whistler Olympic Park has the only operating large hill in Canada and more than 90 per cent of Nordic combined and ski jump events are held on large hills. Also, the event allowed Canadian athletes to compete on an international level without significant travel expense. With more than 3.2 million media impressions, the area received significant exposure that is expected to lead to additional sport and other tourism. Direct economic and tourism benefits included increased revenue for local tourism and hospitality businesses. Volunteers and officials upgraded skills to international levels to form an experienced resource pool for events leading up to the 2010 Winter Games and beyond.

Hosting BC provides BC communities with funding to host national and international sport events. The program is supported by the Province of British Columbia.
