Story

Representatives from sport and tourism organizations came together in Richmond to discuss one of the fastest growing sectors in Canada - Sport Tourism. Offered for the first time in 2005, the BC Sport Tourism Events Marketplace was an opportunity for business-to-business networking between community tourism representatives and provincial sport organizations. More than 75 delegates attended the event to explore sport event hosting opportunities.

The Marketplace portion of the event involved five, six-minute meetings between each group represented. In advance of the event, delegates had submitted a list of those organizations or community representatives they would like to have some one-on-one networking time with.

"We received positive feedback from the participants and they expressed an interest in meeting again next year. We hope this event grows in the future to include more communities and sports," said Laura Plant, manager, Community Development, Tourism British Columbia. "It offers a great opportunity for BC communities to highlight what they can offer to sport event organizers while also learning about the specific requirements of event hosting."

The BC Sport Tourism Events Marketplace is an annual one-day event that brings the tourism and sport industries together to explore sport event hosting opportunities. The event is in partnership with Tourism BC and the Province of British Columbia.
