Story

The 2008 Olympic Diving Trials received $10,000 from Hosting BC. A selection event for the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing, the trials drew 57 athletes, aged 13-34, from six Canadian provinces. There were 1,750 spectators and an estimated wecast audience of 10,000. Almost 100 volunteers supported the event.

The event gave local divers an opportunity to witness elite athletes and be further motivated to pursue their sport. Direct economic impact included 700 hotel room nights booked and participants spending an estimated $50,000 at hospitality industries and with local suppliers. Volunteers and officials upgraded their skills to form an experienced resource pool for Olympic and other major games. Media coverage of the event raised the profile of diving and Victoria's local diving club, Boardworks.
