Story
The 2008 Canadian Amateur Boxing Championships received $10,000 from Hosting BC. The event drew 112 athletes, aged 18-34, from 10 Canadian provinces who boxed in front of 1,200 spectators. Forty volunteers supported the event.
The championships brought an opportunity to qualify for the Olympics of Boxing to BC for only the second time in 20 years. As host, BC was able to enter two additional competitors in each weight division. Local coaches and officials were upgraded to national levels and may serve at future major events. New equipment provided by the tournament sponsor will remain in the local boxing community to aid young athletes.
Direct economic benefit included 700 hotel room nights booked and additional revenues through participant and guest spending. The event also provided local employment for on-site doctors, first aid attendants, drivers and a web manager to post real-time results.
