Penticton Hosts International Freestyle Skiing Event

Story

The 2006 Freestyle Fédération Internationale de Ski (FIS) World Cup Finals received $35,000 from Hosting BC. The final World Cup event of the year, the competition featured 113 of the best athletes in freestyle skiing, coming from 15 countries including Belarus, Finland, Japan and New Zealand. The Finals drew 5,000 spectators to Apex Mountain Resort with thousands of fans world-wide watching the telecast, resulting in significant international exposure for the resort and local area.

The direct economic impact from participant, visitor and organizer spending has been estimated at almost $1.5 million. Also, new mogul, aerial and half-pipe courses were created to meet international competition specifications, allowing local and provincial freestyle programs to train to international standards. In addition, $10,000 was invested in new equipment and materials that can be used for future training and competitions.


 

Hosting BC provides BC communities with funding to host national and international sport events. The program is supported by the Province of British Columbia.
