Story

With $5,000 from Explorations, Pender Islands Elementary Secondary School hosted a two-week arts camp for 22 children, aged 6-11. The camp provided an opportunity for children to experience quality arts instruction in their own community, where few such summer programs are offered.

The Pender Islands Summer Exploration Camp included activities, such as scavenger hunts and fort-building, to help students learn about forest and ocean ecosystems. Campers also experienced photography, painting and calligraphy and the music program offered singing and creating percussion instruments. At the end of camp, students performed their own compositions using instruments they had constructed.

Explorations provided students in kindergarten to Grade 7 with opportunities to explore arts, sport and recreation in summer camp settings. The program, which ran from 2005-2008, served students who were otherwise unable to attend summer camps due to location, local resources or financial limitations. Explorations was supported by the Province of British Columbia.
