Parksville Measures Up in Accessibility

Story

Parksville received $20,000 from Measuring Up. Funds were used to conduct an accessibility survey of Parksville retail businesses and to hold two public meetings. Identified priorities included: accessible parking; more crosswalks; accessible washrooms; and smoothing rough sidewalks. Information gathered will contribute to an Accessibility Guide and an Access Parksville website. An Accessibility Challenge for community leaders helped raise awareness about issues for persons with a disability.

Measuring Up helps communities assess and improve how accessible and inclusive they are for people with disabilities, seniors and others with similar needs. The program includes a fund, established by the Province of British Columbia, which offers grants to communities to complete accessibility-related projects.
