Story

Innovations provided $5,000 for an October 2008, three-day festival of choral music. Nanaimo Sings! A Festival of Choral Music involved 14 local choirs and 400 singers performing six mini-concerts at two different venues in the city. More than 1,700 people attended the events. Thirty-two downtown restaurants and merchants became Festival Partners offering special promotions to Nanaimo Sings! ticket holders. The event culminated with a Gala Concert in which the choirs performed individually and en-masse. The festival was created to strengthen and enhance the area’s choral community by building networks, showcasing choirs, and developing choral opportunities for the community at large. The website nanaimosings.com was well-received as a vehicle for featuring choirs, sharing information, and promoting choral events.

The Choral Festival Society has since become a registered, not-for-profit society. The 2008 Nanaimo Sings! Festival was the first of its kind for Nanaimo, and based on its resounding success, there are plans for more festivals in the future.

At a post-festival meeting, organizers made the decision to maintain the Society and the Steering Committee structure. They developed a five-year plan which includes a second festival in 2011.

Innovations invests in arts, cultural and heritage organizations wishing to create new opportunities for community members to participate in arts and cultural activities. The program is supported by the Province of British Columbia.
