Maple Ridge and Pitt Meadows Celebrate Spirit of BC Week 2008

Maple Ridge and Pitt Meadows joined more than 100 communities to celebrate Spirit of BC Week 2008 by hosting numerous events. The Maple Ridge-Pitt Meadows Spirit of Wood Festival, hosted by the Mountain Festival Society, was a community celebration with a variety of interactive activities focused on the wonder of wood. A highlight of the week was the unveiling of the Community Carving Project, created by 874 local citizens and installed in the library.

Literacy events at the Maple Ridge Public Library drew more than 300 people and included Spirit Dancer, BC Coast by Canoe, where Hall of Fame photographer and explorer Chris G. Cooper presented his travels of BC's West Coast aboard a 42-ft Montreal canoe. There were also readings by children's author Sheri Radford; and by Brian and Rick Antonson, who read from their book Slumach'es Gold.

A Youth Curling Event at the Golden Ears Winter Club was hosted by local members of the Spirit of BC Altitude Youth Experience.


Spirit of BC Week is an annual province-wide celebration of British Columbia and its unique communities. Held each February, it is a week of over 300 events and activities showcasing local programs and services that strengthen community arts, literacy, sport, recreation and volunteerism. The celebration is supported by the Province of British Columbia.
