Story

There were 284 athletes, aged 15 to 35, participating in the 2005 Honda Tour of Champions-National Championships snowboarding event, which received $10,000 from Hosting BC. There were seven provinces represented in the competition which was attended by 10,000 spectators. Serving as a catalyst for young snowboarders to start competing, the event also saw 150 volunteers gaining experience leading up the 2010 Olympic Winter Games.

The city received an estimated direct economic benefit of $15,000 along with significantly increased profile through national media coverage. A sophisticated race timing system purchased for the event will be used for future national and provincial training and competition. Also, the event contributed significantly to plans for a National Snowboard Training Centre in Kelowna and Big White Resort and triggered agreements for facility upgrades to improve early season training capacity at the mountain resort.

Hosting BC provides BC communities with funding to host national and international sport events. The program is supported by the Province of British Columbia.
