Story

The Canadian Yachting Association Women's National Keelboat Championship received $5,000 from Hosting BC. There were 22 teams totaling 110 athletes competing from across the country. There were 2,000 spectators for the event with a TV audience of 50,000 and a web cast audience of 5,000. More than 30 volunteers supported the event.

Extensive media coverage gave significant profile to the sport and the area and will likely increase sport and other tourism. Local coaches and officials were able to receive additional training to a national level. Plans are developing for an annual Okanagan women's keelboat championship, as well as a women's provincial championship, based on the success of this event.

Hosting BC provides BC communities with funding to host national and international sport events. The program is supported by the Province of British Columbia.
