Story

The 2008 National Senior Goalball Championships received $7,500 from Hosting BC. The Paralympic event drew 53 athletes with visual disabilities, aged 16-45, from eight provinces. There were 150 spectators at the event, which was supported by 140 volunteers. The event was key to the Beijing 2008 Paralympic team selection.

This was the first time such an event was hosted in BC and increased the province's chance to host Junior Championships in 2009. Volunteers and officials upgraded their skills to national levels to form an experienced pool of resources for future major events. Direct economic benefit included increased revenues for hospitality industries and local suppliers. In addition, the event raised the profile of blind sport competition.

Hosting BC provides BC communities with funding to host national and international sport events. The program is supported by the Province of British Columbia.
