Story

The 2008 Panorama NorAm Men's and Women's Alpine Skiing event received $10,000 from Hosting BC. Held at the Panorama Mountain Resort, the event attracted 160 athletes, aged 18-24, who came from seven countries, including Sweden, Croatia and New Zealand as well as four Canadian provinces. There were 300 spectators and a webcast audience of 500. One hundred volunteers supported the event.

The event offered junior and club level athletes exposure to elite competition to motivate them to pursue their sport. Direct economic benefit was estimated at $500,000 from travel, training, hosting and accommodation. Volunteers and officials upgraded their training to international levels and may serve at future major events. Panorama Mountain Resort and Alpine Canada have established a primary, world-class training centre at the site that can be used in future by Canadian and international teams.

Hosting BC provides BC communities with funding to host national and international sport events. The program is supported by the Province of British Columbia.
