HIVE Showcases Eleven Theatre Companies

Story

HIVE, a unique and ambitious event, showcased the work of ten creation-based theatre companies in Vancouver and one from Victoria, all under one roof. It was an unqualified success as every company was exposed to audiences that might otherwise not see their work. Approximately 78 artists took part in the show’s run in 2006 with 35 employees, and 12 volunteers. More than 525 audience members attended – a sell-out for all shows. Many more waited at the door each night for possible available tickets.

In addition, HIVE was a Zero Carbon Event. Using online software, companies calculated the environmental impact of their work and offset negative impacts with financial donations to ecological organizations. The project, funded with $22,000 from Innovations, also addressed the independent theatre community’s needs to share resources and cross-fertilize creative ideas and strengthened the bond between companies. HIVE was one of the biggest tasks the Electric Company has undertaken. Its success was invigorating for the company, and for Vancouver’s independent theatre community.

Innovations invests in arts, cultural and heritage organizations wishing to create new opportunities for community members to participate in arts and cultural activities. The program is supported by the Province of British Columbia.
