Story

Funding of $5,000 from Explorations allowed the Mission School District to hold an arts camp for 92 children aged 5-12. Called First Nations Art Camp, it involved ten schools in the area and was hosted at Hatzic Elementary. There were 20 Aboriginal campers.

Activities involved making button blankets, beading, weaving and drawing. In the sports sessions, campers participated in volleyball, basketball, and track. Special events included Camper of the Day awards and "Sundae on a Friday" ice cream breaks. Each camper received a T-shirt and a bead blanket as souvenirs of the camp.

Explorations provided students in kindergarten to Grade 7 with opportunities to explore arts, sport and recreation in summer camp settings. The program, which ran from 2005-2008, served students who were otherwise unable to attend summer camps due to location, local resources or financial limitations. Explorations was supported by the Province of British Columbia.
