Story

With $5,000 in funding from Explorations, the Vancouver School District hosted an arts camp for 19 children aged 8-12. Held at General Brock Elementary, the 10-day camp included activities such as sketching, printmaking and using different materials such as pastels and acrylics. In addition, field trips to Vancouver parks allowed students to draw landscapes and objects in a new environment. Some of the artwork from the camp is displayed at the host school.

For many students, this was the first time they had received art instruction. Organizers say Explorations allowed children to experience a camp in their own community and enabled participation from lower-income families.

Explorations provided students in kindergarten to Grade 7 with opportunities to explore arts, sport and recreation in summer camp settings. The program, which ran from 2005-2008, served students who were otherwise unable to attend summer camps due to location, local resources or financial limitations. Explorations was supported by the Province of British Columbia.
