Story

Funding of $25,000 from Explorations allowed the Vancouver School District to host 17 one-week sport and recreation camps for more than 330 children aged 7-13. Forty-two East Vancouver schools participated in the camps, held at Charles Tupper, David Thompson and Prince of Wales secondary schools.

Students engaged in volleyball, soccer and basketball skill-building sessions and games. Individual report cards and feedback were given, along with awards for Camper of the Day that reinforced teamwork and fair play. Organizers say this was the first camp experience for many children from lower-income families.

Explorations provided students in kindergarten to Grade 7 with opportunities to explore arts, sport and recreation in summer camp settings. The program, which ran from 2005-2008, served students who were otherwise unable to attend summer camps due to location, local resources or financial limitations. Explorations was supported by the Province of British Columbia.
