Story

Coquitlam, one of 100 communities celebrating Spirit of BC Week 2008, drew almost 2,000 participants to its festivities. The week was officially launched with a flag-raising ceremony at Nestor Elementary School where students shared what community spirit means to them.

The week's activities included skate events attended by 1,100 people as well as swims, adult volleyball, a family open gym and free curling lessons. There was also a jazz and blues music night produced by Société francophone de Maillardville, two spelling bees that involved 160 participants, and an evening of music to celebrate Chinese New Year.

Spirit of BC Week is an annual province-wide celebration of British Columbia and its unique communities. Held each February, it is a week of over 300 events and activities showcasing local programs and services that strengthen community arts, literacy, sport, recreation and volunteerism. The celebration is supported by the Province of British Columbia.
