Story

Funding of $5,000 from Explorations allowed the Coast Mountains School District to host a summer music camp for 22 children aged 7-13. Clarence Michiel Elementary hosted the camp. It provided an opportunity for children to experience free arts instruction in their own community, where few such programs are offered.

Activities included a drumming circle; drama and music lessons; and talent shows. Two music instructors tutored the young musicians and co-conducted the group; student assistants coached small instrumental groups. There were also games and additional crafts activities for younger campers. Camp ended with a concert for families.

Explorations provided students in kindergarten to Grade 7 with opportunities to explore arts, sport and recreation in summer camp settings. The program, which ran from 2005-2008, served students who were otherwise unable to attend summer camps due to location, local resources or financial limitations. Explorations was supported by the Province of British Columbia.
