Story
The 2007 Canadian National Whitewater Slalom Championships received $10,000 from Hosting BC. There were 86 athletes, aged 8-60, who came from the US and from four Canadian provinces to compete in the event. There were 450 spectators and 77 volunteers. Media coverage included national television and organizers expect the exposure will bring additional sport and other tourism to the area.
Younger athletes were able to benefit from high performance coaching through camps held as part of the event. A novice flat water clinic provided student employment and opportunities for local children to try the sport. Economic and tourism benefits included spending by participants, fans and guests in accommodation, restaurant, and retail industries. Many visitors extended their stay to experience local tourist amenities. The championship triggered upgrades to the timing system and training sites.
