Story

With $15,000 from Explorations, the Mission School District offered three arts camps and three sport and recreation camps to 75 elementary school children. Ten schools participated, along with host school Cherry Hill Elementary. The camps included children who might otherwise be unable to attend summer camps because of behavioural or economic limitations.

The Mission MAD (Music, Art, Dance) camps included singing, dance and music with children making drums, rainsticks and flutes. Students also learned about photography, and how to use pastels, charcoal and acrylic paint. A mural they created was hung at the Mission Arts Council building. Camps ended with performances and exhibits for families.

Explorations provided students in kindergarten to Grade 7 with opportunities to explore arts, sport and recreation in summer camp settings. The program, which ran from 2005-2008, served students who were otherwise unable to attend summer camps due to location, local resources or financial limitations. Explorations was supported by the Province of British Columbia.
