Story

Funding of $6,500 from Explorations allowed the Central Coast School District to host a sport and recreation camp for 16 children in grades 4-8. Participating schools were Nusatsum Elementary and Sir Alexander MacKenzie School. Some campers were members of the Nuxalk First Nation in Bella Coola Valley which also loaned a voyageur canoe for the camp.

Activities included golf, kayaking, snorkelling, horseback riding, tennis, and canoeing. The camp ended with a campout at the Old Talheo Cannery. Organizers say the camp reached children that would not normally be able to access such programs.

Explorations provided students in kindergarten to Grade 7 with opportunities to explore arts, sport and recreation in summer camp settings. The program, which ran from 2005-2008, served students who were otherwise unable to attend summer camps due to location, local resources or financial limitations. Explorations was supported by the Province of British Columbia.
