Story

The 2008 National Track Cycling Championships received $5,000 from Hosting BC. The event drew 135 athletes from seven provinces and territories. There were 1,500 spectators and 30 volunteers supported the race.

The event offered national level experience for local cyclists without significant travel expense and was used as a selection event for the World Cup. It showcased the Burnaby Velodrome, one of only three indoor velodromes in North America, and increased interest in the sport and additional bookings for the Velodrome Club's Learn to Ride programs. Direct economic benefit includes increased revenues for hospitality industries and local suppliers. Success of the event led to Burnaby being selected as venue for the 2009 Championships. Officials and volunteers upgraded their skills to national levels to form an experienced pool of resources for future major events.

Hosting BC provides BC communities with funding to host national and international sport events. The program is supported by the Province of British Columbia.
