Burnaby Celebrates Spirit of BC Week 2008

One of more than 100 communities celebrating Spirit of BC Week 2008, Burnaby attracted almost 500 people to local festivities. The Bill Copeland Sports Centre was the venue for the official launch of the 4th annual Spirit of BC Week. Events included a flag-raising ceremony featuring local and provincial dignitaries, a community marketplace, free family skating presented by BC Hydro, figure skating demonstrations, and performances by local multi-cultural groups. A free family swim drew 180 swimmers of all ages to Eileen Daily Pool.

A Poetry Slam saw youth performing poetry that expressed their Spirit of BC in styles including hip hop, rant and story telling. The Burnaby Public Library led the event which also involved graffiti painting and a barbeque.


Spirit of BC Week is an annual province-wide celebration of British Columbia and its unique communities. Held each February, it is a week of over 300 events and activities showcasing local programs and services that strengthen community arts, literacy, sport, recreation and volunteerism. The celebration is supported by the Province of British Columbia.
