Story

Burnaby, one of more than 83 communities to celebrate Spirit of BC Week 2007, held numerous activities including a free family skate day at Bill Copeland Arena. The day was themed "Live, Learn and Play in Burnaby". Also at the Arena, the Burnaby Express Hockey team offered public readings as part of the team's established Literacy, Bookmark and Pen Pal program where players visit elementary schools to read to primary grades and play floor hockey with intermediate students. The program was extended into the free skate days and the arena's foyer was used to display books and promote literacy.

Burnaby also hosted a Performing and Visual Arts Showcase. The event highlighted community arts and culture ranging from school bands and choirs, to community dance and theatre companies, to visual arts groups. Performances took place at James Cowan Theatre and the visual arts component was hosted at the Shadbolt Theatre. The Showcase included the official opening of Spirit of BC Week involving the Mayor, Council and civic dignitaries.
