Story

Funding of $14,500 from Explorations allowed the Vancouver School District to host six one-week sport and recreation camps for almost 500 children aged 6-13. Forty-four schools participated in the camps that offered 10 different activities. Camps were hosted at Britannia Secondary.

Students experienced drumming, gymnastics, lacrosse, ultimate Frisbee and other activities. Camper awards that reinforced teamwork and fair play were given daily and weekly. Organizers say this was the first camp experience for many children from lower-income families.

Explorations provided students in kindergarten to Grade 7 with opportunities to explore arts, sport and recreation in summer camp settings. The program, which ran from 2005-2008, served students who were otherwise unable to attend summer camps due to location, local resources or financial limitations. Explorations was supported by the Province of British Columbia.
