Story

More than 500 people celebrated Spirit of BC Week 2008 on Bowen Island, one of approximately 100 communities celebrating the Week. More than 340 residents took part in the 1,960 kilometre Walk to Whistler and the first Island Winter Fest involved numerous events and upwards of 50 performers and artists.

Activities included lantern making and a premiere screening of the award-winning animated series, Raven Tales, which tells the stories of Aboriginal peoples. The series was created by local artist, writer and producer Simon James, Jr. who was available to speak about his work.

The Winter Fest also included entertainment by the Black Sheep Dancers who led a parade down to Snug Cove beach for a sing-a-long, chocolate fondue and community bonfire, where local storyteller Doreen Giesbrecht told tales of BC.

Spirit of BC Week is an annual province-wide celebration of British Columbia and its unique communities. Held each February, it is a week of over 300 events and activities showcasing local programs and services that strengthen community arts, literacy, sport, recreation and volunteerism. The celebration is supported by the Province of British Columbia.
