Story

From 2005-2009, with support from the Province of British Columbia, 2010 Legacies Now distributed $5.5 million to the BC Recreation and Parks Association for its Active Communities program. Active Communities aimed to increase British Columbians' physical activity levels by 20 percent by 2010.

Active Communities collaborated with communities, local governments, Aboriginal groups and partner organizations to promote and increase physical activity levels, expand accessibility to programs, and build supportive community environments. Grants of up to $5,000 were awarded each year to communities registered in the program to help maintain trailways, walkways and bikeways; assess active transportation needs; organize special events; and develop community plans and implement programs.

In total, there were 226 communities across BC registered in the program. Visit activecommunities.bc.ca for more information.
